Thank you for saving my life!

Hi Dr. Amy!
I was a patient of yours in 20**. I don’t expect you to remember me, but I wanted to write and say thank you for the impact you made on my life years ago.
When I first saw you I was 18 years old and had seen several therapists, been hospitalized and was very shut down. I was severely depressed, angry, and stuck in my addiction/alcoholism. You were the first person that ever got through to me and helped me become willing to take the steps towards a new life and recovery. The last time I saw you, I was suicidal, lost, and the thought of living weighed so deeply on me I could barely breathe. You recommended that I go to (treatment center). I listened to you, took a chance and went to treatment. I had a couple of slips after that, but went back to rehab and have found my way!
I will have 8 years sober on April **. I went back to college and got my BFA today. I am working at a company called ***, and talk to other struggling addicts all day long, and help them get into treatment. It’s amazing and my life is so beautiful today! I am happy, content, stable, and life is good.
So, I want you to know that you changed my life, and without you, I may not have made it another year. You are a beautiful person and I pray you are well and still helping people.
Eternally Grateful,
26-year-old female

Dear Dr. Demner,
I needed to share a copy of my poetry book with you. For me it has closed one chapter given me (much needed) closure and it has allowed me to move on without any regrets. Thank you for your passion and patience and thank you for helping me along my path to self-discovery.
Much has changed since I have seen you last but this much remains constant; with your guidance I came to realize that being honest and altruistic is the ultimate path. That anything is possible with the right view, attitude, and perseverance. These are invaluable lessons I and will take them with me for the rest of my life.
Simply,
Thank you.
36-year-old FTM

Dear ********,
As I am sitting here writing to you, your wonderful mother is in the other room with my husband in a session. I need to let you know that you “kids” are wonderful too. Your mom’s expertise and willingness to take this weekend and come to **** is making a real difference in our lives and I appreciate you giving up your weekend with your mom so we can begin to mend our marriage.
This makes you a part of our process and I want to say thanks for sharing your very special gift of your mom’s time with you and your willingness to do this.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Dr. Amy,
This is a little note with several months of news. First off, thank you for the letter you wrote on my behalf a couple of months back, which ended up to be very useful in my fight to get my documentation switched. I couldn’t have done it without you, and I sure appreciate it.
I miss our visits, as I always felt so safe and comfortable with you, but I remain grateful that our paths crossed. If my life had to take this path, it’s worth it if it meant meeting wonderful people like you. Will always be grateful for all you’ve done for me.
Love and cheer,
38-year-old MTF

Dear Dr. Demner,
As the light of day shines, there is a passion of hope. For me it is a center, a place for growth and understanding. The place that synchronizes the dreams of the future. To know that time and speed slow so that I might glow. Your unwavering to a pure and honest celebration brings in the light of hope and allows freedom from within my spirit.
To learn to just be and to learn to let it be is a reward of joy I take from you. The grace of time says it’s time. To be still and focus upon your unwavering trust grants the dreams that were once lost. The words of the wise from a relationship of a type I pray will be for days to come.
A toast to Dr. Amy Demner who lights up the room with her unwavering gift of hope. May the grace of God’s hand be upon you.

Dear Dr. Amy,
I really want to thank you for all your help with me. I have really come a long way from the first day I first walked into your office. I have to admit there were plenty of times that I thought I wouldn’t make it through the tough times but I did because you were there cheering me on and I knew that if I fell you would be there to help me up.
As I look back on those years I can honestly say that I am a stronger person and have more faith in my decisions and in my ability to enjoy life and take care of what life is going to bring me.
It was very hard for me to say goodbye to you on Tuesday, but I know in my heart that you will always be there for me and in my heart. I know that I can always call you and that you’d never turn your back on me.
I could go on and on telling you how much I appreciate all of your help but I think that you already know that.

Dear Dr. Amy,
Just wanted to let you know that our group reminds me of the song, “You make me feel like dancing.”
For some reason – through your group and your compassion, insight and helpful information my irrational fears of what I won’t be able to do are dissipating and now I’m focusing on what I still can do. Thank you for that.
Fondly,
32-year-old female

Dear Dr. Amy,
First, I’d like to apologize for not saying good-bye, especially since you deserved it! I received a job offer and moved to ** and I became so self-absorbed I forgot to think about those who mattered and made such a difference in my life – like you! So, I’m sorry.
The job I came up here for didn’t work out. On a more positive note, I received an offer from **** for a position I would love to have and they offered it to me today! I feel so healthy and happy and proud of myself that I finally did this! Enough with all the talking about it, go for it and I did!
As my therapist, you have made the hugest difference in my life or, rather, you’ve helped me make a huge difference in my life! So, thank you!
Best regards,
26-year-old female
